Negativity is a mental poison. It’s bitter and once it is swallowed it causes major damage to the brain and nervous system. Like a tapeworm in your stomach it feeds itself on everything you consume. All the information you receive, everything you experience – negativity takes part of it away from you.
It is both a poison and a parasite. A parasite is, according to Wikipedia, an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense. Negativity feeds on your incoming sensory information, it nourishes itself and lets you have the leftovers. The tainted, disgusting leftovers after negativity has its way with the information.
The Pessimism Pattern
Negativity is a disposition. Some people are more likely to see the world in a negative way.
This is a pattern, not a permanent state. It has to do with mindset and personal achievement.
When you have achieved a lot of success in life it is easy to have a positive view of the world. You believe the world rewards for the work you have done.
Everyone has had some success in their life so everyone has a reason to see the world in a positive lens. If you have had success once in life you can have it again.
There are massive resources out there to help you achieve what you want in life. If you live in a 1st world country, have internet access, and are able bodied you should never make excuses.
The issue with negativity is that it is easy to fall into if you are not mindful and aware of your emotions. You may fail trying something new and then start considering yourself to be a failure. This is why you need a growth oriented mindset. Every setback is an opportunity to grow. If your mindset is an issue for you I would recommend reading Psycho-Cybernetics (Amazon). It is the best book for improving your self-image, a bad mindset always stems from a poor self-image.
When you have a positive and optimistic worldview you will encounter a world than confirms those beliefs. A negative worldview will have the opposite effect. The cycle you can get stuck in from negativity can be far worse. This is because when you are positive you are walking in the clouds, anything that knocks you, knocks you down to earth. When you are negative you are walking on earth, anything that knocks you, knocks you into hell.
The Negativity Cycle
The negativity cycle also leads to a terrible case of confirmation bias. The process goes like this:
- You believe the world is a bad place. This leads you to walk around anywhere you go with a negative facial expression.
- People see you walking around with a negative facial expression, they are then far less likely to smile at you and treat you in a friendly manner. On top of this people are more likely to treat you poorly.
- You don’t experience many positive emotions around strangers. This confirms your world view. You feel vindicated in your belief that the world is a bad place
- This process will repeat until you can break out of the loop.
Outlook = Actions
However low you are, you can always be lower. Changing your outlook on life will change how you act in the world. This is turn will change the way people treat you. It really is this simple.
